Background

With the advances of artificial intelligence, we have the opportunity to massively expand our intelligence. This makes AI a decisive factor for positive change – for individuals, organizations and mankind.

China aims to become the leading nation in research and application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by 2030. To achieve this, China is investing more than 150 billion US$ to bring AI into their companies, administration, universities and educational institutions.

The U.S. has large digital companies like Google, Facebook, IBM, Amazon/AWS, Microsoft, Adobe, Nvidia and many others that invest billions of US$ each year in research and adaptation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML).

Hamburg, Germany and Europe are falling behind. The developments in China and the USA must be seen as inspiration and combined with European know-how.

European companies can remain competitive through increased collaboration and cooperation, an intensive exchange of experience, the targeted bundling of know-how from companies and science, and jointly operated further developments.

“AI is a key technology in all technical disciplines, which we at the Hamburg University of Technology are already applying and developing excellently. Bringing together the individual experts and exchanging information about the solutions developed is necessary in order to survive in international competition.”

Artificial intelligence and machine learning offer possibilities today that were not imaginable 5-10 years ago. Due to exponential growth of cloud computing power and available data, edge computing and standard open source software tools and more and more standard solutions, the application of AI is more accessible today than ever before.

For the history of mankind, this is a unique opportunity to take huge steps forward very quickly. For this purpose, it is necessary to recognize the chances to make AI an integral part of corporate strategy and to constantly implement and further develop these technologies.

For this it is crucial to look ahead responsibly and sustainably and to include important topics such as ethics, security, data protection and equality on the basis of European standards from the outset, without getting lost in discussions about the dangers of AI and automation.

“Hamburg’s economy has always been at the forefront of exploiting the technical possibilities to develop new processes and products. This is still true today. Especially in the fields of aviation, life science, renewable energies, maritime economy and logistics, artificial intelligence will soon change the entire production process. In Hamburg the future builds on tradition.”
